CropCheck™

A simple, practical way to assess a crop, identify what may be limiting production, and find the most useful opportunities to improve. Rate 10 key checks. It takes about five minutes.
Yield is limited by the most limiting factor. This tool does not give a total score, because an average hides the one thing holding the crop back. It shows you which check is limiting, and what to do about it.
Do it standing in the field if you can. Look at the whole field first and look for patterns before scoring anything — the tool helps with that.
A saved draft was restored.

What are you assessing?

Some checks can only be judged later in the season. This marks those for you.

First, look at the whole field

Walk a “W” or “X” across the field and note where the crop is good and where it is poor. Then compare the good and poor areas, and the surrounding fields, before you score anything.
Pattern → Percentage → Compare → Cause → Action

The 10 checks

You do not need to work through these in order. Start with what you can see and ask questions as you go. If a check cannot be judged yet, choose Not yet — an honest gap is more useful than a guess.
How well is it done?
  • 1 Major problem — action needed
  • 2 Weak — important improvement possible
  • 3 Acceptable
  • 4 Good
  • 5 Very good — little opportunity to improve
  • Not yet — cannot be judged at this stage

Anything else?

Keep an open mind. Were there other things that affected production — labour availability, weather, sickness, theft, a late land preparation, something the farmer mentions?

What is limiting this crop?

Using the results

Do not try to change everything. For each weak check, decide whether it is worth acting on this season, considering: how important is the problem, do we understand its real cause, is there a practical solution, and is the change easy to try and worth the effort?

CropCheck summary

A planning aid, not a substitute for field judgement or locally appropriate professional advice. Adapt recommendations to the crop, environment, farming system and local conditions, and always follow product labels and safety requirements.
